Ran on my own mostly today, but the first mile was with Mark. Keeping my ankle in control and feeling fast. I really would like to race, but now is not the time. I need to get back in business this season. BorderClash proved that I'm faster than what I showed for almost all of last Cross Country season and I would like that to carry through into track.

Ran on a treadmill at the club today because I felt bad and my mom didn't think I should spend too much time outside. I feel aches because of my illness but I know they aren't legitimate concerns because I am getting them in parts of my arms that I have not yet worked out this week.

Glute felt good for most of my 10 miler today on the treadmill and I felt pretty good in general so I think I am no longer too sick to run outside. I will resume running outdoors on Monday and hopefully my glute/hip strength exercises as well. Next week is my first at 50 miles, which I may hold till my taper. I could potentially move up to 55 later if my trend of feeling good continues.

2 miles warm up, dynamics and strides. Started off strong. Pace felt surprisingly easy for not having had any hard effort since cross country season. Sat behind the Seattle U coach at the start and then I started to feel it a bit so he began to gap me. A New Mexico runner was there and him and some guy in a gray shirt moved up next to me. New Mexico guy made a move before the mile mark (It was a little further than a mile cause I came through in 5:30) and the coach tried to go with him. The coach began to drop off him and then the gray guy tried to go and get the coach, leaving me with some alone time while everyone ran away. The coach dropped the gray guy and I eventually worked my way up towards him, staying in position about 5 meters behind. Around halfway I passed him and immediately got passed back. Struggled to hold on a bit and then passed him back again pretty quickly. There was then nobody immediately in front of me for a while. At mile 2.5 gray guy passed me back. I just tried to hold on for dear life as my stomach was giving so many warning signs at this point and I was committed to not barfing while I was still running. He began to gap me, and then a Club Northwest guy in a hat came past pretty quickly. At this point I saw the mark for approximately 200 meters to go in the distance. Another Club Northwest guy passed me and him and gray shirt had gapped me now with the hat guy leading them by a bit. Not sure exactly when I acquired a kick, but I ate up the distance between myself and these guys and almost had the hat guy by the end, having passed one of the Club Northwest guys and the gray dude. Course ran slowly because of the rain this morning, and my fresh brooks launch shoes are no longer fresh looking. Guy in front was a 1:48 800/3:44 1500 and he got 15:20 today while SU coach ran 14:55 here last year and got 15:42 today. My time was 16:02. Additionally, I heard the names of people I beat (not sure by how much as I can't see the results yet) who were definitely sub 16 on this course earlier. More than happy with where I am after such disastrous training in the recent weeks and preseason nonetheless. I am glad to know that my glute problems have not affected my good fitness approaching the season. 1 mile cooldown and semi-alright vibes from the glute.

7 mile run with the Thawed Quad Squad. Glad I'm getting back at the time that I am. Still one week to prepare before track season. Have had a persistent stomach ache this week that got pretty bad today. I believe it could be another bit of sickness that I hope does not get worse provided I have already gotten sick three other times in the last month or so. Right now it does not count as it has not inhibited my training to any significant extent.

4 miles easy. May have messed with my leg muscles abut playing soccer but I must use them somehow to get them durable and back in the loop. Regular treatment afterwards. PT wizard Rich says I may be stretching too hard and hurting my upper hamstring and glute as a result with a strain. Dialed back the intense stretching. I'm typing this pre run on Thursday and things are looking up. Maybe 100% healthy next week. I'm hopeful. Thankful that I'm running 6 days this week under current plans.

Time trial today. Wasn't expecting anything great due to my recent training difficulties. As usual all of us were in trainers. Many were bummed that the track was wet for our run but in this area it always will be. I took out the first 200 in 31 and backed off immediately when I realized what I had done, coming through the lap in a more reasonable 66. The cause of my quick start could have been my teammates, in the opening bit, trying to get ahead of me for whatever reason and forcing me to go very fast. I missed the presence of Alex because, although having somebody running directly behind you doesn't help much, it certainly is a motivating factor to have people near you. I made separation at 500 meters. Came through 800 at 2:17. 1200 was a 3:31. Finished in 4:39, my fastest time trial that I've ever run. Dante is currently running well as he got second with a 4:51. Matthew was slightly behind him and he also ran 4:51, having outkicked Will who ran fourth with 4:52. Our team is hurting and there were some disappointing time trials, but I can go into this season with the hope and expectation that it will be better than last year's track season and shift the tone of my upperclassmen years. Coach Brad says that, since I have been able to pull off a very long kick before, that I should stretch out my kick to 400, maybe 500 meters. I agree with him. First meet, the Jamboree, will have Bishop Blanchet and thus Peter, the 3rd fastest runner in 3A (And 4th fastest time in all divisions at the state meet if I recall correctly) in it. I am currently running fast with little training and in two weeks I fully expect to be great. It would be a privilege to have a fast runner to stick with and thus run a very fast time early in the season, whatever event it ends up happening in.

Workout day. 4x200 + 4x400 + 4x200. Coach told us to run slightly faster than time trial pace so I was supposed to do 33s and 67s. Rest was to slow-jog/recover the same distance as our previous interval. Not very challenging so my jog was 8:00 mile pace and my rest was 1 minute for 200s and 2 minutes for 400s. Hit my splits with a few fast intervals. 31 for first one because people from the group behind me tried to run with me and I thought I was going too slowly. Turns out they were far past their pace. 31 for one where I got distracted and subconsciously went faster to lap Carter's group again before I finished the interval. First and last 400s were 66s due to pacing error. All in all I feel good but it's hard not to want to do a more strenuous workout.

Lightish workout of 6x1k with 60 seconds rest. Felt good. Wanted 3:15 but my first one I went overboard due to confusion from my teammates running with me and did 3:02. The remaining repeats were average 3:13 with very little variation. Tiring, but by no means extremely difficult. I'm in good shape. Currently I have yet again become sick but I will be more responsible and dial off training if my coach seems it necessary. I'm not going to lose a ridiculous amount of weight from something like this again.

Turns out I am running a fever. Maybe I shouldn't have run on it yesterday but I completed my weekly mileage. Not sure if there's potential for me to run tomorrow. I don't want to damage my training by running through sickness like I did during XC.

So I got sick this week and missed Monday. I am typing this from Sunday and entered my easy mileage for the day as my total from the week. Ran the 800 as I didn't think I could handle a longer distance being sick (was worried cause I bombed a workout on Wednesday). Took it out in fourth and caught up with the group in the final straightaway of the first lap. Passed the leader (Dante) at 500m and made a break, kicking hard down the final stretch. Apparently that wasn't enough as Dante came past me and won by a tenth or two. Still happy with a two second PR in my first race of the season in this condition. Dropped a 55 in the third leg of my 4x400 for my fastest quarter ever run and our team won the meet. Watched our freshmen Tom and Ben both run 4:52 for their first race, which was great. Both of those guys should be under 4:40 by the end of the season. Finished an 8 mile run on Saturday.

Awesome tempo today. Still coughing but almost in the same shape I was at the END of XC according to this run. That's good news for my 3200 on Thursday. Very glad Watson had an incredibly solid workout.

3x(200+200+800) with huge rest (4 min) between sets and ~1 min between intervals, first two in my trainers with 800s of 2:15 and 2:16. Last interval in my spikes with a slight negative split 2:12. Thought spikes would make a bigger difference but I was tired.

Raced the 3200 today. Went out in 4:48 and had a good rhythm. Race fell apart and I ran 75, 76, 75, 70 finishing my second mile in 4:57. Not a horrible solo effort for the start of the season but not a good one either. Legs felt spent from the get go. Probably can pin this one on my workouts this week and the fact that I'm still coughing so there is something in my lungs. Then one of the 4x4 teams wanted me so I ran that and split a 57. Last time I split a 55 but I'd run the 800 then and there were people right around me during the relay. This time I had just finished the 3200 a couple minutes beforehand and was passed the baton with my team slightly gapped from the others. Got a little ground on one of Juanita's teams but not much. I wore 1/8th inch spikes today and I didn't like the feel. Didn't get the easy grip on the track that I got with 1/4ths that made running in spikes feel so effortless. I will try racing in 3/16th inch spikes next week in all likelihood.

Good mile today, ran 2 68s going out, 3rd lap was 66 and I took the lead with 500m to go. Came through the line in 3:22 high and did the final lap in 62 mid for a 4:25 low. Big negative split so I know I can go faster. This is positive news. My legs were not ready to double today and I also ran the 2 mile. I was not expecting to have to race so it caught me off guard when I got passed. Ran 9:42 for second. Mile's in a good place but hopefully I can get a little closer to my best in the 3200.

Fell off entering my stuff for over a week so I'll give a summary of this week and the race capping it off. Probably did 40-ish miles this week. Ran a meet on Thursday against Juanita and Sammamish. PRed in the 800 staying with the pack and outkicking the field by a second in the final straight for 2:02. Followed that up with a 54.4 4x400 leg. For me relative to my previous shorter speed (or lack thereof) that's really good. Eason mile was a success. Ran out with 3 leaders for 65 1st lap, 65 2nd lap. Well, turns out those guys are really fast and did a 61 3rd lap, leaving me completely on my own as I was the only one who went with them for the first 800. I did another 65 for my 3rd lap. My closing lap left further effort to be desired and I ran another 65 for a PR of 4:20, although with more effort I believe that could be a 4:18 or 4:19. I also believe I would do better to have people near me for the second half of the race. There were other guys with the capability of pushing me in the race, however much of the field didn't have great races. All in all though a very successful race for me and a very good field of milers. I did a 3200 but at that point I hadn't eaten in 8-ish hours and of course I had already run the mile. 9:36 for second. Pretty good time especially under the circumstances. Not a PR, but that will happen later.

Been hitting full mileage straight through this meet. Coach told me to dial it back to conserve for the Invite on Saturday in which I'm doing the 3200 as that event has been struggling for me, which is probably more due to circumstance rather than my actual abilities in the distance. He told me to win but take it as easy as possible doing so. Nice almost perfectly even split 67-68-68-68 mile where I coasted in at the end. It felt really smooth and comfortable and I was surprised to receive such a good time. Same deal in the 800, although at a faster pace, negative split a 64-62 for a very smooth 2:06. I was very happy to find, given that I trained through this meet, that a significantly lower effort yielded such great times! This is a positive result and means great things for the future of my season. Also positive that Watson, a very very hard worker, cruised his way to a solo 10:28 in the 3200, a mere 8 seconds off of his 10:20 PR from the Eason Invitational, even being on PR pace until the last 800. It is my firm conviction that he has the ability to run under 10:10 this Saturday. Completed my mileage using long warmups and cooldown runs.

4 miles easy with 3x150 buildups in preparation for Saturday. I'm typing this Saturday morning and woke up with a pretty bad allergic flare-up with lots of sinus pain and a significantly swollen throat. I'm working on it and hope to feel better but if my race doesn't go well it's not representative of my ability and I already know based on the past 2 weeks that I'm doing very well. Also, given the short-term nature of this ill-timed condition, this should not affect the currently promising future of my season.

Woke up in the morning with my throat swollen almost shut. Felt very bad. I attribute it to seasonal allergies. Very bad pain in the sinuses and throat. I took medicine for it and I felt light-headed. I got to the meet and it still felt bad. Furthermore, the Invite was even more delayed than I anticipated and I ended up eating too early as a result. At this point I was fairly confident I was about to lay the biggest brick in the history of bricks. The race began and I hung on to the lead pack. We were hitting fairly consistent 71.5s and came through the mile at 4:46. Still a strong group at that point. I believe our 5th lap was slower. 100m into our 6th lap, a guy from Jackson HS made a big move and took off. Nate Pendleton ran after him and although they slowed their sharp move distanced them from the pack and the gap was growing. I responded fairly quickly to this move and got to the front of the chase pack, and then began pulling away from them. I got into second a bit past the start of the 7th lap and spent the whole lap reeling the Jackson guy in. Passed him with 350 to go and he got me back with about 270 and got about a 3 second gap by the end of the race. I missed my PR by half a second but I felt so bad today before and after the race that I think this is a very encouraging result. Will, Matthew, Chris, and Tom PRed with 9:50, 9:57, 10:12, and 10:22, respectively.

I am going to resume entering races and workouts here but my taper has begun and mileage is low and just designed to keep me fresh as possible for state. District 1600 was pretty good. Pack went out fairly fast and I maintained position in lane 2 near the front. First lap was a 64, then a 66. Next I took the lead to push the pace and we came through in 3:14. My legs were pretty tight so I couldn't respond as effectively as desired to the final move that the 2 Garfield runners pulled but I held on to them. Finished fairly hard and did a final push to hold off Enrique from Franklin challenging me for 3rd. Now I'm going to State and I have a new PR. All in all a good result.

Time to resurrect the blog. Here's a riveting summary for my huge following of readers: First week I did 22, second week I rolled my ankle and missed two days and hit 20. Today I did my first workout of the summer: 4x800 with 400 jog rest. Goal was 2:30, averaged 2:25. Difficult, but very good for a morning workout in my trainers this soon in the training. Just came back from hitting the weights, almost all legs. Finished off with 5x2min jumprope sessions, which were monumentally aggravating. Jumproping looks dumb if I do it correctly, but it sure as hell looks completely stupid when I mess up every 15 seconds consistently. If that damn rope gets between my legs one more time I'm walking into traffic. Also anybody who sees this, is it okay to have a weight day on the same day as a hard workout? Legs are holding up fine right now.

Hello, friends, family members, disturbed future employers, and, most importantly, hordes of adoring fans. I am pleased to inform you that I will be logging my training once more, much to all of your delight. It was a travesty to leave all of you hanging for these months and I truly regret that. I humbly beseech your pardon with the hope that the unique opportunity to read more about me and my training invites the spirit of forgiveness into your hearts. My fearless escapade into the mystery of distance running has been beleaguered with issues. Let's start where I left off: In the summer, reportedly feeling "off" on my training runs, as I informed my millions (billions, perhaps?) of worried readers. My mileage surged like the powerful Ganges River during the great monsoons of India. I reached a peak of 60 miles a week that, were I less sophisticated, I would deem "whopping". I prefer the word "tremendous" for such a feat, considering I had struggled to reach 50 since sophomore year, barely attaining that mark at last by the end of senior year. Zealously adherent to the perscribed training program graciously granted to me by Coach Walter Drenth of the Institution of the State of Michigan, I, with tremendous mileage in hand, began "cookin," as those with inferior vernacular to one such as myself would state. A man of high standing and intellect, which I certainly am, would choose a term such as "flourishing". Whilst flourishing in the early stages of my career at the institute, many fast runners had the privilege of being joined by me in their workout group, including my esteemed roommate, Morgan. I achieved a 5k PR on a course, the likes of which yields few 5k PRs. However, I was stricken by the ailment known as mono just before my first 8k, in which I subsequently fell flat. Crippled, devastated, and removed from training, my body fought this terrible disease for three weeks. Three long, horrific, and hard-fought weeks. However, there truly is good in this world, and your hero prevailed and emerged from the fire only kind of scathed. He now diligently pursues recovery along an infuriatingly slow, conservative progression and hopes for the day that he may be cookin' once more. Until next time, loyal readers.

Forever your idol and role model,

Luke Beauchamp

If you read all that, props. I'm not sure anybody will. I certainly wouldn't. After all, this training log is for me, not for you. How selfish of you to think that it was for you!
